Winning the Private Label Popularity Contest

There are many reasons to celebrate at this year’s PLMA show, Store Brands and Beyond.

After all, in 2014—

  • private label’s market share reached almost 25% of U.S. unit sale and has expanded faster than national brands
  • total private label sales were a record $115.3 billion
  • in supermarkets, nearly 1 in 4 products sold and $1 in $5 of sales were store brands

Why is private label so popular?
Store brands continue to represent outstanding value to the American shopper. In a recent study, the National Bureau of Economic Research reported that, “the best informed shoppers were more likely to buy the store brand over the brand name options. For example, chefs and pharmacist who were surveyed were more likely to buy store brand food items for their homes.” It also appears that today’s consumers are not returning to the higher-priced options they had deserted during the recent recession.

With most consumers believing store brands are as good as or better than national brands, the next step is to be more innovative. Indeed, retailers are freshening and extending their existing private label offerings, knowing that they provide a solid foundation for customer loyalty and strong profits.

That’s why hundreds of today’s supermarket, supercenter, drug chain, mass merchandisers, convenience stores, onliner retailers, importers, exporters, wholesalers, discounters, and military exchange buyers are looking for new products and identifying new suppliers. That’s great, but with all this excitement and activity surrounding private label offerings, how do you make YOUR private label line stand out?
